Natural Sunscreens That Really Work

I think we have tried every single natural sunscreen on the market, I swear I am not kidding.  And finally after several years of trial and error and much, much, much feedback from the kids (and the man- but I guess they are just like kids when it comes to putting on sunscreen...) I have found a combination that works. Yes, they are a bit more expensive, especially since you can't buy them a BJs or Costco but you can find them on Amazon Prime or at Target (and even on sale at times).  And in my opinion it is worth it.  They don't contain those harsh chemicals such as oxybenzones and derivatives, which you should try to avoid at all costs (synthetic estrogen that can penetrate your skin and disrupt your hormone system).

So here is the breakdown of what we love, and when I say love I mean that there are no tears and a whole lot less complaining when it is time to apply, and they actually work :)  Here is to a tear-free, sunburn-free summer!

Every day use for the kids:

Kiss My Face Sunscreens

Kiss My Face has a huge line of sunscreens for the entire family.  Not sure why so many, but we have tried most of them and these are our favorites.  Note, we liked the sunscreen in the large squeeze trigger bottle, which is a great size to take to the beach or the soccer field, but the trigger always seems to break.  I have tried it several times over the past 4 years with the same result, so unless they change the packaging, stay away to avoid a bag full of leaked sunscreen.  Yuk- not fun to find when you reach in to find the sunglasses you threw into the bag covered in sunscreen.

Face Factor 50 works super well, but it does leave white residue if it isn't rubbed in well.  Great for the fairer skinned though, probably the best quality sunscreen we have found, and that is saying something.  One of my girls could get sunburned simply by sitting under a sunroof...

The Cool Sport Spray is a staple in every single bag I own.  It works well, sprays well, smells pleasantly light and has a cooling effect on the skin when spayed on the skin.  I buy this in bulk on Amazon Prime, cheapest place I have found it.

The Hot Spot Stick is great for camp, the beach, hiking, golf, etc to give you that extra coverage on your "hot spots".  It is aptly named and serves well as a chapstick too.  The version pictured is clear, but comes in fun colors too (remember the white noses of our younger years now you can have a blue or pink nose too).  The kids seem to love that, which is a great motivator for them to reapply themselves at camp.

Every day use for me:

Bare Republic Natural Mineral Sunscreen

Bare Republic Natural Mineral Sunscreen has an amazingly light texture.  Particularly the face cream, this is my favorite sunscreen ever!  A little goes a long way and it honestly feels like baby powder, though the smell is pleasing.  I use it every day on my face in the summer with no break-outs and it really works- even in the strong rays of the Colorado Rockies!  The sport version is also light, but provides more coverage and it is water resistant.  This is what I use when I am exercising and know I am going to sweat.  The spray too, is great.  Feels nice and light, cools the skin on contact and is naturally propelled.

I know that there is has been so much media around using spray sunscreen.  Note that it is CHEMICALLY PROPELLED sunscreens you should avoid, not all sprays!  This stuff is great, but don't spray your face- I know that should be obvious, but I have seen even smart people spray their face rather than applying creams.

Best For Him:

Alba Botanica

It would be too easy if your guy would use the same sunscreen as you or the kids, but in this case it isn't a bad thing.  Alba Botanica is cheaper than the Bare Naturals I recommend above and more widely found; you can find it almost anywhere.  It goes on easily, doesn't leave a white residue, is waterproof (although I think the Kiss My Face for the face is more sweat proof), is stable in the hot care and on the beach, and smells like a tropical vacation.  Most importantly, I have been told that it doesn't sting after shaving- guess that is all that needs to be said.

Happy sunning- the cleaner, healthier way.  Just be sure to reapply regularly!
